interactive installation

3D animation, two studio flash lights, interactive triggering system, semipermeable screen, logos of PW - Polish Resistance and Legia football club cut as stencils in cardboard

Installation bases on the phenomenon of the afterimage and therefore cannot be reproduced by any means. It is possible to see the effect only live, with naked eye.

A screen is installed in the passage between two gallery spaces. Looped animation of going down through evacuations stairs in spiral motion is beeing displayed on the screen. Animation is made with simple black lines against a white background. Proportions of the staircase are based on Polish construction law.

When the viewer decides to stop in front of the screen the interactive system detects the presence and an action occurs. Two flashlights hidden on the other side of the screen are triggered couple of times in random order. Very strong light goes through the stencils  with  the symbols and displays them on the animation screen. The flash of light is so short that it is barely noticible but yet strong enough to create the afterimages of the hidden stencils-symbols.

Hidden symbols burned on viever’s retina are Polish resistance logo from the wartime and Legia Warszawa football club logo. Together, next to each other they can be unconciously read as „PL”, which is international, official abbreaviation of Poland.
